:: Steve's Pedalboard

:: The Pedalboard consists of the JMP-1 4-way controller, which basically turns on a delay or some Chorus if I need it..

:: The Settings are -

:: 1 - Dry Overdrive (OD1)
:: 2 - Chorus Lead (OD1) +volume boost
:: 3 - Delay Lead (OD1) +volume boost
:: 4 - Clean w/Delay + Chorus

:: Next up is a new Guv'nor Marshall Overdrive Pedal to generally push things over the edge, and last but not least, My battered but beautiful Wah pedal, I simply couldnt live without it..

:: This pedalboard was made from wood, Gaffa, and bits of cardboard believe it or not.

:: It's survived well over 500 gigs no problem, but its looking a little battle weary.

:: Incidentally, If anyone out there wants to make me a Diamond-plate steel pedalboard, then get in touch.

:: I've always found that If you want to do something properly, do it yourself, things always get fixed that way.

:: Strings & Picks

:: Steve's Pick's and Strings

:: Strings are always ERNIE BALL, on the strat I use 9-46 to help the bottom end.

:: I now have an endorsement with Ernie Ball strings - www.ernieball.com

:: On the Jackson and the Peavey EVH guitar I use 9-42.

:: On the Gibson SG its either 10-46 or 9-46.

:: Over the years I've found that heavier strings on the bottom make a bit of a difference, but on the top, for my style of playing, makes little difference, as I like to bend strings.

:: Picks are Dunlop 1.5mm, the purple ones.

:: BOSS TU-2 Stage Tuner

:: Boss TU-2 Stage Tuner..

:: Do yourself a favour.. walk into your local guitar shop and ask for a BOSS TU-2 Guitar Tuner..

:: I've always used Korg/Boss Tuners.. but for ease of use, and tuning on stage this takes it to a new level..and no I don't work for Boss/Roland...

:: This has been in my pedalboard now for a few months and I dont know how I've lived without it..

:: A/B Boxes

:: Steve's Custom Made A/B Boxes.. more at home now thanks to the BOSS TU-2

:: Boss/Banzai A/B [left] - Banzai effects produce an A/B Box kit for next to nothing, and ive made one of those too, with LED'S. The lights are really bright making it great for stage use.

:: I had an old Boss EQ pedal that I no longer used hacked it apart and gutted it to make way for the DPDT switch and led's and wiring.. it works great....

:: Custom A/B [right] - This one was made from a box I had lying around and a DPDT [Double Pole Double Throw] switch pulled mercilessly from an old Guvnor Pedal.

:: When I was figuring out how A/B boxes were made I learned from Eric Johnson that you have to wire them in a "X" fashion so it shorts out the other side of the channel.

:: This allowed me to run one side into a tuner, and another into the amp, thus acting like a mute/tune switch and change guitars with the minimum of fuss, and no noise.

:: A/B boxes are an essential bit of kit, I've found no end of use for them.

:: Click HERE for a wiring diagram of how I make my own A/B Boxes.

:: Marshall DRP-1 Preamp settings

:: For Home Recording I use Adobe Audition and Sony Vegas...

:: This mainly consists of a Marshall Jfx-1 Effects unit plugged into the PC's LINE IN on the sound card..

:: Signal Chain - Guitar > Tuner > DRP-1 > JFX-1 > LINE IN

:: From the Jfx-1 I can plug in either my Marshall JMP-1 Preamp or the newly arrived Marshall DRP-1 to get some great overdrive sounds direct to hard disk..

:: It's a nice simple set-up that is very flexible as well.. Most of my demo's or ideas or students work gets recorded with this set-up..

:: I much prefer recording with a preamp rather than using plug-ins and vst's etc.. I find them to be a bit generic and un-natural..

:: I dont think the technologies quite there yet.. but im old fashioned... maybe if Marshall made one then id be interested !!
